5 Common Home Plumbing Problems and Solutions

Categories: Plumbing

When problems with your plumbing crop up, they can be frustrating and inconvenient. But with a little know-how, many common issues can be easy to fix on your own. Here are some of the most common home plumbing problems and solutions we see at Heiden Plumbing, Heating & Cooling. Problem #1: You Have a Clogged Drain

Whether you have a clogged drain in your kitchen or bathroom, it’s a major inconvenience. Before you bring in the professionals, there’s a few things you can try. First, check to see if there’s anything visible you can remove. If the clog is in the kitchen, try to use your garbage disposal to dislodge the blockage. You can also use a plunger or a drain snake to try and remove the problem.

Problem #2: Your Faucets Are Leaking

The drip-drip-drip of a leaky faucet isn’t a pleasant sound—and it can also run up your water bill if it’s not addressed. Luckily, this can be an easy fix. The leak is usually due to a worn-out washer or gasket, or a loose O-ring. A faucet repair kit, sold at most hardware stores, can also help you identify the problem and fix it.

Problem #3: Your Water Pressure Is Too Low

If you’ve ever taken a shower with low water pressure, you know how unpleasant it can be. If your water pressure is taking a dip, check your faucet to see if there’s anything that’s blocking the water flow. If you’re familiar with your home’s water pressure regulator, check to make sure it’s functioning. If it’s bad, you’ll notice a decrease of pressure in all faucets (and you’ll need to call in the professionals).

Problem #4: Your Toilet Won’t Stop Running

Just like a leaky faucet, a toilet that won’t stop running can be a noisy nuisance—one that wastes water unnecessarily. Sometimes all that’s needed is a quick adjustment to the chain in your tank. Other solutions include checking the toilet flapper to make sure it’s not worn out or dirty, and replacing your toilet’s flush valve.

Problem #5: Your Water Heater Has Issues

If you suddenly don’t have enough hot water, or hear loud, abnormal sounds coming from your water heater, you likely have an issue there. Check the heater’s thermostat to make sure it’s set between 120-140º F and wait to see if the situation improves. You can also restart the water heater to see if that helps.
