A running toilet may not seem like a big deal, but it’s a sneaky problem to deal with. When ignored, it can waste as much as 26 gallons of water a day. Clogged drains can be a recurring and frustrating problem. Between hair, soap, food, mineral deposits, and dirt, there are a lot of ways to cause backups. Mix ½ cup of salt and ½ cup of baking soda together, pour it down the clogged drain, and let it sit for half an hour before flushing it away with boiling water. In general, water heaters last about eight to 12 years. To reach the tail end of that—and beyond—you need to take good care of it. That means regular maintenance appointments, insulating your pipes, and replacing corroded anode rods. Flushing the system out with manufacturer-recommended methods also helps.
